Earlier this year, we sent out a few articles on deer taken during the 2015-2016 deer seasons in MS. One such article focused attention on a really wonderful buck harvested by my sister’s grandson on her farm in Madison County, MS. After the 60 day mandatory drying period, the buck was officially scored by Boone and Crockett Official Measurer, Rick Dillard, and Rick scored the buck at 170 2/8 as a Typical.  The minimum net score for a typical whitetail to qualify for “the book” under the All Time Records division is 170 inches. As was mentioned in the initial article, Rick submitted the score sheet and pertinent information on the Mitch Phillips buck to the Boone and Crockett Club earlier this year as the rules require that the score sheet and details be reviewed and approved by Boone and Crockett officials before any animal can officially be entered into “the book”.

For those of you who do not realize how short 2/8ths inch is, rest assured it is not very long. There was virtually no room for error if Mitch’s buck would be destined for the Boone and Crockett All-Time Records. After several months of waiting and waiting and waiting some more, on September 23, 2016, Mitch was officially notified that the official Boone & Crockett score was confirmed to be 170 2/8, and Mitch’s buck has now been enrolled in the Boone & Crockett All Time Record Book.

A copy of the official Boone and Crockett Club Records of North America Big Game certificate certifying the score for the buck to be 170 2/8 and stating that the deer has been entered into the 30th North American Big Game Awards, 2016-2018 on August 29, 2016.

In MS, as well as in most states, a Boone & Crockett quality buck is an extreme, extreme, extreme rarity, and it is quite an honor and blessing to be able to harvest such an animal. It is also a similar honor and blessing to be the owner and/or manager of a property on which a “Book Buck” is harvested. To Mitch, my sister and all of her family—CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You have experienced a true once in a lifetime event.
